What is Supplemental Security Income?

Social Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program that provides money to meet the basic needs for food, clothing and shelter to help the aged, blind, and disables persons who have little or no income. To meet the basic requirements the applicant must meet the following guidelines:

  1. Be 65 or older, or blind, or disabled;
  2. have limited income, limited resources, and a US citizen or national, or one of a certain category of alien;
  3. Be a resident of the United States; and
  4. Not be confined to an institution at the government’s expense;
